Industry : Unspecified

Description of the organization and its target audience:

Children’s book author, target audience for readers is 3-7 years of age

Details

Description

Searching for an illustrator to help me illustrate a children’s book. I prefer 2-D drawings or watercolor-esque over digital/graphics. Also I love cute or minimalist. Only looking for 1 illustration for this contest. This illustration would spread across two pages.

The book is set in Big Bend, a mountain/desert area of Texas and centers around a cute little cactus who looks like a mitten (please refer to the image I shared as the cactus looking like a mitten is vital to the story…I especially love the faint horizontal lines) and wants to make a friend.

**Saguaro cacti are not native in Texas, where the story takes place. These are the cacti that look like this: 🌵. Please do not include them in the background.**

I included a picture of the cactus the story is based on. Please capture its charm. It looks like mitten (which later becomes its name). I love its faint lines.

Here are a few lines from the book to serve as inspiration:

My name is Mittens. I look like a glove.
I’m waving at you with so much love.

Project 5: Blend Art Book Cover Design

Objective: Design a visually compelling book cover for a poetry collection titled “Whispers of Inner Peace” using Adobe Illustrator. The design should reflect the soothing, introspective, and contemplative themes of the poetry collection, employing blend art techniques to create a seamless and tranquil visual experience.
Submit Type: Digital (JPEG or PNG format, 300dpi), Upload On Behance as mockup presentation and share with link
Skills to be Learned: Vector illustration, gradient blending, typography, composition, and visual storytelling.

Instructions:

  1. Open a new document in Illustrator (size: 6” x 9” for a standard book cover, with 0.25” bleed on all sides, 300dpi).
  2. Begin by conceptualizing the theme of the poetry collection. “Whispers of Inner Peace” is about tranquility, inner calm, and personal reflection, so think about calming colors (soft blues, greens, purples) and organic shapes that evoke a sense of serenity.
  3. Use the Pen Tool to create fluid, organic shapes or abstract patterns that convey movement and harmony. These shapes should suggest natural forms like waves, clouds, or flowing lines, which can be blended seamlessly.
  4. Apply gradient fills to your vector shapes, experimenting with both linear and radial gradients to create smooth, ethereal transitions between colors. Ensure the gradients evoke a peaceful and calming atmosphere.
  5. Use the Blend Tool to create smooth transitions between different shapes and colors. You can blend paths, shapes, or even text elements to create a soft, fluid look. Pay close attention to the spacing and smoothness of the blends to maintain a gentle, harmonious effect.
  6. Design a simple, elegant focal point using the blend technique, like a central shape or element (e.g., a softly glowing orb, a leaf, or a feather) that symbolizes inner peace.
  7. Choose a clean, minimalistic typography style for the book title, “Whispers of Inner Peace”. The font should be elegant, understated, and easy to read. Consider a serif or script font that conveys calmness and reflection.
  8. Position the title and author’s name in a balanced manner on the cover, ensuring that they complement the overall artwork. Experiment with transparency, gradients, or blending modes to integrate the text into the design without overpowering the imagery.
  9. Consider adding a subtitle or quote (optional) below the title to give more context, but keep it minimal to avoid clutter.
  10. Save the final design in a high-resolution format (JPEG or PNG) for submission. Make sure the file size is optimized for digital use but maintains excellent quality for print.

Project 6: Cartoon Mascot Design for a Travel Agency

Objective: Design a fun, friendly, and memorable cartoon mascot for a travel agency using Adobe Illustrator. The mascot should embody the spirit of travel, adventure, and exploration, while also reflecting the agency’s brand personality—whether it’s energetic, professional, or laid-back. The mascot will serve as a recognizable character for the agency’s marketing and branding materials.
Submit Type: Digital (JPEG or PNG format, 300dpi)
Skills to be Learned: Character design, vector illustration, color theory, creative thinking, and branding.

Instructions:

  1. Open a new document in Illustrator (size: 8” x 8” or 1000px x 1000px, 300dpi).
  2. Begin by brainstorming ideas for the mascot’s personality. The mascot should appeal to the target audience of the travel agency, whether it’s adventure seekers, families, or luxury travelers. Think about what kind of character would best represent the agency—this could be an animal, a human figure, or an abstract shape with personality.
  3. Use the Pen Tool and Shape Tools to create the basic structure of the mascot. Start with simple geometric shapes and build up to more complex forms as you refine the design. Ensure the character is friendly, approachable, and instantly recognizable.
  4. Add distinctive features to the mascot that relate to travel—such as a suitcase, backpack, globe, airplane, or camera. These elements should be integrated naturally into the character’s design to make it clearly associated with the travel industry.
  5. Apply color to your mascot, keeping in mind the travel agency’s branding colors (if provided) or choosing a palette that conveys energy, fun, and trustworthiness. Use solid fills or gradients to give depth and dimension to the design.
  6. Focus on facial expressions and body language. The mascot should have an inviting smile, confident posture, or a playful gesture that reflects the positive, adventurous spirit of travel. Consider adding accessories like sunglasses, a hat, or a map to enhance the character’s personality.
  7. Ensure that your mascot design works well in both large and small formats. It should be easily recognizable even when scaled down, as it will likely be used across various marketing materials like websites, social media, and business cards.
  8. Add any final details, such as shadows or highlights, to give the mascot depth and visual interest. Consider using the Gradient Tool for soft transitions in shading and highlights to keep the design clean yet dynamic.
  9. Once the mascot is complete, create a simple but effective layout with the mascot and the travel agency’s name or logo (if applicable). Position the text in a way that complements the character, ensuring the logo is readable but does not overshadow the mascot.
  10. Save the final mascot design in a high-resolution format (JPEG or PNG) and submit it for review. Make sure the mascot is also saved as an editable AI or EPS file for future use in different formats.
