Function : MINUTE()

📘 Definition:

The MINUTE() function extracts the minute component (0–59) from a time value.
It’s especially useful in attendance systems, transport timetables, or billing systems where precise time tracking is required.

🧩 Syntax:  =MINUTE(serial_number)

  • serial_number → A valid Excel time value (e.g., 8:45 AM or a cell containing time).

🧠 Example (Indian Perspective):

Time Formula Result (Minute)
9:15 AM =MINUTE(A2) 15
12:00 PM =MINUTE(A3) 0
3:45 PM =MINUTE(A4) 45
10:59 PM =MINUTE(A5) 59

Explanation:
If A2 = 9:15 AM, Excel interprets this as 9 hours and 15 minutes, so the result is 15.

🪜 Step-by-Step Explanation:

  1. Suppose A2 = 3:45 PM

  2. Formula → =MINUTE(A2)

  3. Excel extracts 45, ignoring the hour and second parts.

💡 Tip:

If your time is stored as text, use:

=MINUTE(TIMEVALUE(A2))

🎯 Why It’s Useful:

  • Helpful for analyzing arrival delays, call durations, or machine run times.

  • Can calculate exact minute differences when combined with the HOUR() or SECOND() function.

  • Used in transport or delivery analysis — e.g., calculating how many minutes late a bus/train arrived.

🧑‍💻 Project Task 1: School Bus Delay Report

Bus ID Scheduled Arrival Actual Arrival Delay (Minutes)
B001 7:30 AM 7:42 AM
B002 8:15 AM 8:25 AM
B003 9:00 AM 9:07 AM
B004 9:45 AM 9:52 AM

👉 Tasks:

  1. Extract the hour and minute parts using HOUR() and MINUTE().

  2. Use the formula to calculate delay:

    =(Actual Arrival - Scheduled Arrival) * 1440

(Multiplying by 1440 converts days to minutes.)

  3. Highlight buses delayed by more than 10 minutes using conditional formatting.

🧑‍💻 Project Task 2: Bank Queue Waiting Time Tracker

Token No Arrival Time Service Start Waiting Minutes
101 10:05 AM 10:20 AM
102 10:10 AM 10:25 AM
103 10:15 AM 10:18 AM
104 10:20 AM 10:40 AM

👉 Tasks:

  1. Calculate waiting time:

    =(C2-B2)*1440
  2. Use =INT() with HOUR() and MINUTE() if you want to break waiting time into hours and minutes.

  3. Create a bar chart showing average waiting time per hour.
